Day of the Dead by Car: Crossing at Nuevo Laredo for Oaxaca, Pátzcuaro & CDMX

Most drivers headed to Oaxaca, Pátzcuaro or CDMX for Día de Muertos cross at Nuevo Laredo's Puente II, then run south on 85D and 57D — the same corridor Mexican families use to get home for the holiday, so Oct 30-31 are the days to avoid. Your US or Canadian auto policy doesn't satisfy Mexico's liability requirement, and outside Baja and the Sonora-only zone you'll also need a Temporary Import Per

The route most Día de Muertos traffic actually takes

If you're driving to Oaxaca, Pátzcuaro or CDMX for Day of the Dead, you're almost certainly crossing at Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, over Puente Internacional II (the Juárez-Lincoln bridge) from Laredo, TX. It's the main artery south into central Mexico via Highway 85D toward Monterrey and Saltillo, then 57D toward San Luis Potosí and Querétaro. From there it splits: west to Pátzcuaro through Morelia, straight down to CDMX, or further south to Oaxaca on the 135D. Eagle Pass and McAllen work too, but they add extra highway hours before joining the same corridor.

When the bridge and highway actually get busy

Puente II runs 24 hours for passenger vehicles. The worst days are Oct 30 and 31, when Mexican families living in the US drive home for the holiday — expect the longest queues in the afternoon and early evening those two days specifically. Crossing early morning, or a day or two earlier around Oct 28-29, cuts both the bridge wait and the highway congestion that builds behind slow RVs and moving trucks. From Laredo, budget roughly 14-16 hours of driving to CDMX, more to Pátzcuaro or Oaxaca once you add rest stops — most people split the drive with a night in San Miguel de Allende, close to the midpoint.

What they check and what to keep within reach

At the bridge, agents check passports for everyone in the car, the vehicle's original title or registration (not a photocopy), your driver's license, and whether you've filled out an FMM tourist permit — do that at the Banjercito module right at the crossing if you skipped it online. Keep your Mexican auto insurance proof handy too; it's the first document checked if there's ever a stop or an accident further down the road.

TIP required once you leave the border zone

Because Oaxaca, Michoacán and CDMX are all mainland Mexico, you'll need the Temporary Import Permit (TIP) from Banjercito — get it at the same Nuevo Laredo module before heading south, since Pátzcuaro and Oaxaca city don't have easy TIP access once you're there. This is different from Baja or the Sonora-only zone, where no TIP is required at all.

What first-timers on this route get wrong

Two mistakes come up constantly: assuming a US policy's Mexico add-on counts as insurance here (it usually only covers damage to your own car, not the liability Mexican law requires), and waiting to buy that liability policy at the bridge on Oct 30-31 when lines are longest. Sort it before you leave home — with Timi it's a chat conversation, no forms, and Chubb issues the policy in minutes.

Short plan vs longer plan

If you're only doing the Nov 1-2 window and driving straight back, a short day-rate policy covering the whole round trip is enough. If you're stretching the trip — a night in San Miguel on the way down, or continuing west afterward toward Copper Canyon — a longer plan avoids re-buying coverage mid-trip. Check our Timi guides for a general border-crossing checklist before you go.

Frequently asked questions

What day should I cross the border to avoid the worst Día de Muertos traffic?
Oct 30-31 are the heaviest southbound days at Nuevo Laredo, as families head home for the holiday, with the worst backups in the afternoon and evening. Crossing early morning, or a day or two earlier around Oct 28-29, usually means a faster bridge crossing and lighter highway traffic on 85D and 57D.
Do I need a special permit to drive into Pátzcuaro for the Night of the Dead at Janitzio?
No special driving permit, but the town closes streets around the main plaza and the boat pier on the nights of Nov 1 and 2 for the vigils. Plan to park on the outskirts and walk or take a local taxi in, and handle your Banjercito paperwork earlier in Nuevo Laredo since Pátzcuaro itself has no module.
My US insurance has a Mexico add-on — do I still need Mexican insurance for this trip?
Yes. That add-on usually only pays for damage to your own vehicle and doesn't meet Mexico's liability requirement, which has to come from a Mexican insurer. Without it, an accident during the trip can mean your car gets held until responsibility is sorted out, even if your US policy would normally cover you at home.
