Drivers based at Las Palmas near Yuma cross into Mexico through the small Andrade port of entry, which feeds directly into Los Algodones, Baja California. Because Baja California is a free-trade zone, you will not need a Banjercito import permit here, but you do need a Mexican liability policy the moment your car enters Mexican territory. If you are staying at Las Palmas (Winterhaven, California) or anywhere in the Yuma area, the crossing you will use is Andrade, the small California/Baja California port of entry that feeds directly into Los Algodones. It is not built for big rigs or long commercial lines — it handles cars, golf carts and pedestrians heading into a compact border town known for dentists, pharmacies and optometrists. Most Las Palmas visitors are on the road only a few minutes before reaching the lot on the US side, where many people park and walk across instead of driving straight into Algodones.
Andrade is not a 24-hour port, so check CBP live crossing times before you go rather than assume it runs around the clock. The heaviest traffic is mid-morning during snowbird season, roughly November through April, when RV parks around Yuma and Winterhaven empty out for dental and pharmacy appointments. Afternoons tend to move faster southbound into Mexico — the real backup is almost always on the return trip into the US.
Coming back into the US, everyone in the vehicle needs a passport or passport card, along with your driver's license and vehicle registration. Heading into Mexico, keep your Mexican liability policy and registration within reach, since Mexican officials do occasional spot checks. US CBP on the return will also ask about anything purchased, particularly prescription medication and dental receipts, so keep those handy too.
Los Algodones sits inside Baja California, one of the free-zone states where the Banjercito temporary import permit (TIP) is not required for the vehicle. That only holds as long as you stay within Baja California. If your trip continues south past San Felipe toward mainland Mexico, you would need to stop at a Banjercito module and get the TIP before continuing, but Algodones day-trippers almost never run into this.
The most common one is assuming a US auto policy, or its Mexico rider, covers liability south of the border — it does not meet Mexican law, which requires a Mexican-issued liability policy no matter how short the trip is. The second is driving into Algodones when parking at the Andrade lot and walking in would have been simpler. The third is treating a two-hour dental visit as risk-free because the crossing is small; an uninsured accident here still means the same detained-driver, impounded-car situation as anywhere else in Mexico.
A single day of coverage is usually all a dental or pharmacy day-trip needs. If you are wintering at Las Palmas for weeks or months and expect to cross repeatedly, a longer-term policy works out simpler than buying a new one-day policy every visit. Timi issues the policy over chat in a few minutes, backed by Chubb, so you can decide day-by-day or lock in the season before you leave the RV park. If your route continues down the peninsula toward Cabo or Cabo San Lucas, check our Timi guides for what changes once you are further south.
