Cabo San Lucas sits at the tip of the Baja peninsula, which means the drive down is long but the paperwork is simpler than for mainland Mexico: no import permit, just valid Mexican liability insurance. Most drivers cross at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa and pick up Highway 1 south from there.
Most drivers heading to Cabo cross at San Ysidro or Otay Mesa into Tijuana, then join the Transpeninsular Highway 1 heading south through Ensenada. Some prefer Tecate: smaller, calmer, and it avoids downtown Tijuana traffic, though it keeps shorter hours and closes overnight. San Ysidro and Otay Mesa run 24 hours.
Cabo San Lucas is roughly 1,000 miles from the border, so this is not a same-day trip. Most people budget two full driving days, overnighting around Guerrero Negro or Loreto. Border wait times vary a lot by hour and day; check CBP's live wait times before you leave and build in slack if you're crossing on a Friday or Sunday afternoon.
Agents typically wave through most passenger vehicles with a quick look, though secondary inspection happens. Have ready: passport for every occupant, the vehicle title or registration, and your Mexican liability policy on your phone or printed. If you plan to take the ferry from mainland Mexico later in the trip, that paperwork is handled at the port, not here.
Baja California Sur, along with all of Baja California, is exempt from the temporary import permit (TIP/Banjercito) that mainland Mexico requires. That exemption covers the whole run down to Cabo San Lucas. It's easy to get confused if you've read a general Mexico driving guide written for mainland routes, since the Baja peninsula and the Sonora-only free zone are the exceptions.
Because the drive itself eats two days each way, most people end up needing well over a week of coverage once road time is added to time spent in Cabo — price it as one continuous trip. Coverage is available from 1 day, and Timi issues the policy by chat in a few minutes, backed by Chubb, so it's easy to adjust if your dates shift.
If you'd rather not drive the whole peninsula, Baja Ferries runs vehicle service between the mainland and La Paz, about two hours from Cabo San Lucas — a common choice for drivers coming from central Mexico rather than the US border. See Mazatlán for that side of the crossing, or check Timi's guides for more on ferry logistics.
