Do I need Mexican insurance for my motorhome?

Yes. US and Canadian auto policies are not valid liability coverage in Mexico. Mexican law requires third-party liability issued by a Mexican insurer for any vehicle driving in the country, and that includes motorhomes and RVs with foreign plates. Timi sells that coverage through Chubb Seguros México.

How the motorhome quote works (the real process)

  1. Open the Timi chat and describe your vehicle. When Timi asks for the vehicle type, choose Motorhome.
  2. Give the year and make, the RV’s value in US dollars, the state or province of the plates, the territory and your travel dates.
  3. You see the price on screen, with the coverage options and the conditions, and you pay by card.
  4. Chubb issues the policy and it reaches you by email in PDF, usually within a few minutes.

Same chat, same three minutes as a car, an ATV or UTV or a motorcycle. The only number to have at hand is what the motorhome is worth today in US dollars: the premium is calculated on it, and Chubb insures up to $200,000 USD.

Towing a travel trailer or a car behind the RV?

Insure the vehicle with the engine — the motorhome, or the car or pickup that tows the trailer. Its liability extends to the first trailer while it is hooked up and being towed (Chubb Tourist Auto conditions). Damage and theft of that trailer, and a car towed behind the RV, are not included by buying the motorhome’s policy, so if you are bringing one, say so in the chat and an advisor confirms with Chubb what can be added and at what price before you pay. Don’t assume the toad is covered because the RV is.

Coverage, limits and exclusions

You see the coverage options for your RV on screen before paying — Mexican third-party liability, occupant medical expenses, and physical damage and theft with a fixed or a variable deductible — with the exact limits, deductibles and exclusions written in the Chubb Tourist Auto conditions. Commercial use and paid transport are excluded. The price depends on the declared value, the days and the territory, which is why the figures on this page are a measured reference and the exact price is the one the chat gives you. Questions and answers

Does Timi insure motorhomes and RVs in Mexico?

Yes. Timi sells Chubb Tourist Auto coverage for motorhomes and RVs registered in the USA or Canada, quoted and paid online in the chat like any other vehicle.

Who can buy it?

The owner or the driver of a motorhome with US or Canadian registration, for private tourist use in Mexico. Commercial use and paid transport are excluded.

How much does Mexican motorhome insurance cost?

At Timi, liability for a motorhome costs the same as for a car, $179.30 USD for 6 months or $197.00 a year, all of Mexico; full coverage on a $60,000 USD motorhome is $723.57 for 6 months or $801.75 a year (maximum declared value $200,000). Reference measured in Chubb's system on 2026-09-18. The chat gives you the exact price for your RV's value, days and territory; quoting is free and has no obligation.

What documents do I need?

Vehicle registration (VIN, plate or registration number and the state or province), the driver’s full name and home address in the USA or Canada, and an email and phone to send the quote and the policy.

For how long can I insure the motorhome?

From 1 day to 1 year: 1 day, 30 days, 90 days, 6 months or annual. You choose the exact start date and the territory (all of Mexico, the northern border states, or Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sonora).

How long does it take?

About three minutes from the first message to the policy in your inbox, at any hour and any day. You can also call +1 424 438 9592 or +52 33 3359 1100 if you prefer to do it with a person.

What are the limits and exclusions?

They are the ones written in the Chubb Tourist Auto policy conditions you get with your quote: liability limits, deductibles, the territory chosen and the excluded uses (for example commercial use). Liability extends to the first trailer you tow; damage to that trailer and a car towed behind the RV are not covered by the motorhome's policy. Read them before paying.

Are US or Canadian policies valid in Mexico?

No. Neither US nor Canadian auto insurance is accepted as liability coverage in Mexico. You need a policy issued by a Mexican insurer such as Chubb Seguros México.

Camper vans and overlanding rigs

Camper vans and Sprinter conversions

A camper van (a Sprinter, Transit or ProMaster conversion, or a Class B) is quoted in the chat as a regular automobile, not with the motorhome rate: liability-only costs the same as a car, $23.25 USD for a day or $197.00 for a year, and full coverage depends on the declared value of the built-out van.

Overlanding: Baja, the Copper Canyon and the mainland

One policy covers the vehicle anywhere in the territory you choose (Baja, the Copper Canyon or the rest of the mainland) for its dates; Baja needs no temporary import permit and the mainland does. Off-road driving is excluded from the policy. In central Baja, gas stations thin out after San Quintín: Cataviña has only basic supply and Bahía de los Ángeles is about 67 km off Highway 1, so fill up whenever you can. An ATV or UTV carried on a trailer needs its own policy to be ridden in Mexico: see ATV and UTV insurance.
