Staying more than 30 days in the US with a Mexican-plated car: which insurance (2026)

More than 30 consecutive days in the US with a Mexican car? Tourist policies stop at 30 days; Chubb Extended Stay covers 90, 180 or 365 days from $250…

The short version

"Annual" and "more than 30 days" are two different questions, and mixing them is the most common mistake we see in the chat. A tourist liability policy for a Mexican-plated car can last a year, but each stay is capped at 30 consecutive days. Staying in a row for two, three or six months (a long family visit, a winter in Texas, a summer in California) is the Extended Stay policy.

Two situations, two policies

The one requirement

The policy is bought while the car is in Mexico, and coverage starts before you cross the border. You declare this when you buy. If your car is already in the United States, message the chat first so we can review your case before quoting.

What it covers

Third-party liability with state split limits (30/60/25 in Texas, 30/60/15 in California) or a $100,000 combined single limit, medical expenses for occupants, and Chubb legal and roadside assistance. Damage or theft of your own car is not included.

How to get your exact price

In the Timi chat you give make, model and year, the driver's age, the state where you enter, the reason (tourism, work, study or resident) and the number of days. You see the price before entering any personal data; if you buy, the Chubb policy PDF arrives in minutes. Timi is the licensed agent (CNSF) and Chubb is the insurer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay 2 or 3 months in the US with Mexican car insurance?

Yes, with Chubb Extended Stay: the 90-day term covers up to three consecutive months and the 180-day term up to six. Real quotes from September 2026: $250 to $360 USD for 90 days and $438 to $640 for 180.

I go back and forth several times a year. Do I need Extended Stay?

No. If each trip is 30 days or less, an annual tourist policy ($175 to $185 USD in September 2026) covers unlimited trips of up to 30 days each and is much cheaper than Extended Stay.

Is "annual" the same as staying a year in a row?

No. An annual tourist policy lasts a year but each stay is capped at 30 consecutive days. Staying in a row for months is Extended Stay.

Does the policy let me keep the car in the US for a year?

Insurance is not an import permit. US Customs rules on temporary import and state registration are separate; the policy covers liability while you drive.
