What does Chubb Tourist Auto insurance cover in Mexico?

Every Chubb Tourist Auto policy sold by Timi covers third-party liability in Mexico ($100,000 USD base, or $500,000 with RC Plus), medical expenses for the occupants ($2,000 per person and $10,000 per event base; $10,000 per person with RC Plus), legal assistance with a lawyer and bail bond up to $30,000 USD, and roadside assistance. If you add the full package, it also covers damage to your own vehicle (collision, glass, fire, natural events) and total theft, with a fixed deductible of $500 USD for damage and $1,000 for theft, or a variable one of 5% and 10% of the vehicle value. Liability and medical expenses never carry a deductible. The exact limits are the ones printed on your policy; the table below is what each line means.

Liability only or full coverage?

Liability only is the legal minimum to drive in Mexico and covers what you do to others; it does not pay for your own car. The full package adds damage and total theft of your vehicle with the deductible you choose. Reference for a 2022 sedan valued at $20,000 USD, all of Mexico: liability only $23.25 USD for one day and $197.00 for a year; full coverage $31.62 for one day and $438.38 for a year (live Chubb rates, policy fee included). Your price depends on the vehicle value, the term and the territory; the chat shows it before you give any personal data.

Fixed or variable deductible?

Fixed: $500 USD for damage and $1,000 for theft, whatever the car is worth. Variable: 5% of the insured value for damage (minimum $400) and 10% for theft (minimum $800); it is 15 to 18% cheaper on the premium and makes sense for cars worth under $15,000 USD. The percentage applies to the insured value, not to the repair. Platinum requires the fixed deductible.

What "comprehensive" means here

US policies split collision and comprehensive; Chubb joins them in Property Damage plus Total Theft. Property Damage includes glass, fire, natural events and towing after a covered loss. Vandalism and partial theft are not in the standard package: they are part of Platinum.

Questions and answers

Does Chubb Tourist Auto cover uninsured motorists?

Not in the standard package. Platinum coverage waives your deductible when the responsible driver is identified and uninsured and adds a medical limit for your passengers. About seven in ten drivers in Mexico have no insurance, so the question is legitimate and Platinum is the honest answer.

Is there a deductible on liability or medical expenses?

No. Third-party liability and medical expenses for occupants work without a deductible. Deductibles apply only to damage and theft of your own vehicle.

Is glass breakage covered?

Yes, under Property Damage of the full package. On 6-month and annual policies, glass claims carry a 20% deductible of the replacement and installation value.

Can I insure my trailer or boat trailer?

Yes, one personal trailer declared with its description and value; liability for the first trailer is included, and damage and theft of the trailer follow the same deductibles as the vehicle. Vehicles towing more than one trailer are not covered.

Are motorcycles covered?

Street-legal motorcycles listed on the policy are covered; sidecars, motorcycles towing a trailer and off-road use are excluded. ATV and UTV quotes are handled by an advisor.

Can I repair my car back in the United States?

Yes, under the policy specification and after Chubb authorizes the shop and estimate. Labor is paid up to the hourly rate printed on the policy; Platinum raises that rate.

Who issues the policy and who pays the claim?

Chubb Seguros México issues the Tourist Auto policy and pays the claims through its 24/7 claims line. Timi, Agente de Seguros y de Fianzas, S.A. de C.V., is the licensed Mexican agent that quotes and sells it by chat.
