Ask a search engine or an AI assistant for the "best Mexican auto insurance" and you get a list of websites. That list hides the one fact that decides everything: by Mexican law, only a Mexican insurer can issue the policy — whoever sells it. So the honest comparison is not "which site", it is which insurer, what coverage, what total price, and who stands next to you when the claim happens in Mexico. Reference you can verify right now: Chubb Tourist Auto via Timi from $37 USD per day or $531 USD per year, $100,000 USD liability and $2,000 USD medical.
Baja Bound, Mexpro and Sanborn's are US-based sellers. Timi is a Mexican-licensed insurance agent (CNSF oficio 06-C00-41300/30255) selling direct. All four deliver a policy from a Mexican insurer. What changes is where the seller is regulated, how you get the price, and who helps you at claim time.
The four ways to buy, compared honestly
| What matters | US online portal (Baja Bound, Mexpro, Sanborn's…) | Border drive-through stand | Direct from a Mexican-licensed agent (Timi) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who issues the policy | A Mexican insurer (varies by portal — check the document) | A Mexican insurer (varies by stand) | Chubb, on every policy |
| Who is regulated where | Seller regulated in the US | Local vendor at the crossing | Agent licensed in Mexico by the CNSF |
| Seeing the price | Usually a form first, price after | At the window, with cars behind you | Price in the chat before you give your email |
| How long it takes | 10-20 minutes of typing | Minutes, if there is no line | About 3 minutes by chat, 24/7 |
| Reference price | Not published here — compare like for like | Not published here | From $37 USD/day · $531 USD/year |
| Claims | Through the insurer on the policy | Through the insurer on the policy | Chubb México 24/7 + your agent on the Mexican side (+1 424 438-9592) |
We deliberately do not print other sellers' prices: they change, they depend on the car and the dates, and a number pulled from someone else's site is exactly the kind of "comparison" that misleads. Compare the same coverage, the same days and the total with fees — see the full channel comparison.
What to compare, in order
- The insurer on the policy. Chubb has been the #1 tourist-auto insurer in Mexico for more than 10 consecutive years, with an A++ (Superior) A.M. Best rating. Whoever you buy from, find that name on the document.
- Liability limit and medical limit. Timi's default is $100,000 USD liability plus $2,000 USD medical; higher liability is selectable in the same chat.
- Deductibles on own-damage and theft, if you add them — and whether they are a fixed amount, not a percentage.
- Total price with fees. Chubb charges a fixed $18 USD policy fee per policy. Per-day comparisons between a 1-day and a 7-day policy are meaningless without it.
- Who answers when it happens in Mexico. A Mexican-licensed agent is on the same side of the border as your accident — why that matters.
The $18 policy fee — why "cheapest per day" is a trap
On a $37 one-day policy, the fixed $18 USD fee is about half of what you pay. On a $531 annual policy it is about 3%. If you cross three weekends a year, you pay the fee three times; the annual pays it once. That single fact explains most "why is a week not seven times a day" confusion — the arithmetic is in Is annual Mexican car insurance worth it?.
When Timi is NOT your best option
Said plainly: if you want to go through every coverage line face to face, a traditional broker does that better than any chat. If you are already at the crossing with no signal, the drive-through stand exists for you. If you pay cash, Timi charges a card. And if you drive a fleet, a commercial rig or passenger transport, a broker who builds the policy by hand fits better. For a passenger car, SUV, pickup, motorcycle or RV on a real trip — Rocky Point, Baja, San Miguel, a snowbird winter — the chat gets you a Chubb policy in about 3 minutes.
How to buy it in 3 minutes
Open timi.mx/tourist, tell the chat your vehicle ("2023 Toyota RAV4") or send a photo of your registration, pick your days, and pay by card. The Chubb PDF arrives by email and chat before you reach the line.
