Do I need a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) and Mexican car insurance?

Liability starts at $23.25 USD per day ($197.00/year) and full coverage from about $31.62 USD per day ($438.38/year, Chubb) — that is the insurance every US or Canadian-plated car needs in Mexico, TIP or not. If your route goes past Baja, Sonora's free zone, or the border strip into mainland Mexico, you will also need a separate Temporary Import Permit from Banjercito for the vehicle itself.

What is the difference between the TIP and Mexican insurance?

They solve two different problems. The TIP (Temporary Import Permit) is a Banjercito paper that lets you bring a foreign-plated vehicle into mainland Mexico for a set time. Mexican liability insurance is what actually protects you if you cause an accident — a US or Canadian auto policy is not recognized as valid liability coverage south of the border, permit or no permit. Timi handles the second part: quote and buy by chat in about 2 minutes, policy PDF by email, issued by Chubb.

Do I need a TIP for Baja California or Rocky Point?

No. The TIP is not required in Baja California, Baja California Sur, or the Sonora free zone that covers Rocky Point, Golfo de Santa Clara, Hermosillo, Kino, Guaymas and San Carlos. Insurance, on the other hand, is needed everywhere in Mexico, including those zones.

What do I need before crossing into mainland Mexico?

If your trip continues past the border zone — say toward San Miguel de Allende or deeper into the interior — plan for both documents: the TIP through Banjercito for the vehicle, and a Chubb policy through Timi for liability or full coverage. Have your title or registration, ID, and travel dates ready; the insurance side takes about 2 minutes on your phone.

Does one long trip need a different insurance term than a border-zone trip?

Not really — the coverage works the same whether you are staying in the free zone or driving to Copper Canyon. What changes is only whether you also need the TIP. Coverage ranges from a single day up to a full year, so you match the term to your actual dates, not the destination.

Frequently asked questions

Does Timi issue the TIP itself?
No, the TIP is a Banjercito procedure for the vehicle, separate from insurance. Timi only quotes and issues the required Mexican liability or full-coverage policy from Chubb, by chat in about 2 minutes.
Can I get my TIP and my Mexican insurance on the same day?
Yes, they are independent processes so there is no reason they cannot happen the same day. The insurance side is fast — quoted and bought from your phone in about 2 minutes — while TIP timing depends on Banjercito's own channels.
If I only cross into Rocky Point, do I still need a TIP?
No. Rocky Point falls inside the Sonora free zone, where the TIP is not required. You still need Mexican insurance for that same trip, since liability coverage is required everywhere in the country.
Does my TIP need to match the same vehicle as my insurance policy?
Both documents are tied to your specific vehicle, so the details should match. The exact coverage for your car and travel dates is confirmed in the chat when you quote with Timi.

The TIP, route by route

Common routes: when you need a TIP and when you don't

RouteTIP?What to know
Nuevo Laredo or Matamoros for a few hours (dentist, pharmacy)No, inside the border stripYou still need a Mexican policy for that day.
Laredo to MonterreyYesMonterrey is past the border strip: TIP plus insurance.
Nogales to Mazatlán or San Miguel de AllendeYesThe Banjercito office on this route is at the Km 21 checkpoint south of Nogales.
Guadalajara or Puerto Vallarta (via Tepic)YesOne policy covers the whole drive for its dates.
El Paso–Ciudad Juárez to Chihuahua, Creel and the Copper CanyonYesThe route leaves the border zone right after Ciudad Juárez.
Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum by roadYesA multi-day drive across several states: buy the term for the whole trip.
Baja California, Baja California Sur and Rocky PointNoInsurance is still required. In Sonora, a vehicle towing a boat, jet skis, ATVs or motorcycles does not use the free zone and needs a TIP.

In December and at Easter, the federal Héroes Paisanos program orients Mexican families driving home for the holidays; it is not insurance and not a vehicle permit. In Spanish: seguro para carro con placas americanas.
