If you are driving your own car to Playa del Carmen, you are not doing a quick border hop — you are crossing at a Texas border town and then driving two to three days down the Gulf coast toll roads. Quintana Roo is mainland Mexico, so a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) is required, and so is Mexican liability insurance, which your US or Canadian policy does not provide.
Almost nobody drives to Playa del Carmen for a weekend from the border. Drivers typically cross at Nuevo Laredo or Reynosa/McAllen, then take the toll autopistas (180D/145D corridor) south through Tampico, Veracruz, and Villahermosa before cutting east through Campeche and into Quintana Roo on the 307 toward Playa del Carmen. Budget two to three full driving days, not one, and plan to arrive and stop before dark — the toll roads (cuotas) are far better maintained and safer than the free roads (libres) that run parallel to them.
The bridges at Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa run 24 hours, and the wait entering Mexico southbound is usually short compared to the return trip north — check CBP's live wait times before you go back, since that side is where lines build. The friction on this route is not the border itself, it is the multi-day drive and the military/National Guard checkpoints (retenes) you will pass along the Gulf highway, where agents commonly ask for ID, vehicle registration, and proof you are a tourist passing through.
Have your passport or passport card, the vehicle title or registration in the driver's name, and your FMM tourist permit accessible — not buried in a trunk. If the car is financed or not in your name, bring notarized authorization; agents at Quintana Roo checkpoints ask about this more than at the border itself.
Quintana Roo is not a free-zone state. Unlike Baja California or the Sonora-only strip, you must get the TIP through Banjercito, either at the border crossing or online in advance, before you reach Quintana Roo. Skipping it because you heard 'the peninsula is a free zone' is one of the most common mistakes on this route — that rule applies to Baja, not to Cancún or the Riviera Maya.
Assuming a US policy's 'Mexico' rider counts as liability (it usually only covers your own vehicle, not the other driver), driving the free roads at night to save toll fees, and not renewing the FMM if the trip stretches past the original stay. If an accident happens without valid Mexican coverage, both driver and car can be held until fault is sorted out — not something you want mid-road-trip.
A one- or two-week Riviera Maya trip (Playa del Carmen plus a side trip to Tulum) fits a day-based policy cleanly, priced from day one. If you cross several times a year or plan to stay for months, an annual policy works out simpler than buying per trip. With Timi you set it up entirely by chat — no forms — and the policy is issued in minutes, backed by Chubb; for more border-specific breakdowns see Timi guides.
