Short answer with the number: a week of Mexican car insurance costs $63.51 USD for liability-only ($100,000 USD liability + $2,000 USD medical) and $131.49 USD with own-damage and theft, measured live against Chubb's system on 2 September 2026 for a typical car and all of Mexico. Per day that is $9.07 and $18.78. The reason a week is far cheaper than seven single days sits in one line of the quote that most sites never show you.
Chubb charges a fixed $18 USD policy fee on every Tourist Auto policy, whatever its length. One day costs $26.97, so the fee is two thirds of it. Seven days cost $63.51 — the fee is paid once and the other six days are almost pure coverage.
Price by number of days, measured 2 September 2026
| Days | Liability only ($100k + $2k medical) | Per day | Full coverage (car ≈ $20k USD) | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 day | $26.97 | $26.97 | ≈ $37 | ≈ $37 |
| 3 days | $39.15 | $13.05 | — | — |
| 7 days | $63.51 | $9.07 | $131.49 | $18.78 |
| 30 days | $166.58 | $5.55 | $390.58 | $13.02 |
| 365 days | $228.52 | $0.63 | ≈ $531 | ≈ $1.45 |
All prices in USD, Chubb Tourist Auto via Timi, territory "all of Mexico", IVA included. Seven separate one-day policies would cost 7 × $26.97 = $188.79 — three times the 7-day policy — because each one pays the $18 fee again. How the "week" is actually sold
There is no week package. Chubb's Daily plan covers any exact number of days from 1 to 29, so a 7-day trip buys 7 days, a 10-day trip buys 10, and a long weekend buys 3. On day 30 the price switches to the 30-day plan. If you are not sure when you will drive back, add a day or two now: a policy that has already started cannot be stretched from the road, only replaced with a new one bought in the chat.
- Liability-only is what the law requires and what a police officer asks for: $100,000 USD liability, $2,000 USD medical, legal assistance. It does not pay for your own car.
- Full coverage adds own-damage and theft with a fixed-amount deductible — not a percentage of the car's value — see how the coverage tiers compare.
- Same coverage on every length. The 7-day policy and the annual are the same product with a different end date.
Who buys a week — and who should buy more
A week is the natural fit for a Rocky Point or Ensenada vacation, a dental trip with a few days on the beach, or a first drive down Baja. If you cross for a weekend every month, three trips already cost 3 × $39.15 = $117.45 in 3-day policies plus three fees; the annual plan at $228.52 covers unlimited trips. Snowbirds and six-month stays should skip the daily math altogether.
What you need to buy it
Your plate number and state (the chat pulls the VIN from it), your travel dates, and a card. Open timi.mx/tourist, say "2023 Toyota RAV4, 7 days from Friday", and the Chubb PDF arrives by email and in the chat in about 3 minutes — before you reach the line at San Diego, Nogales or Laredo.
