The coverage itself is the same policy either way; what changes is the temporary import permit (TIP). Inside the Sonora free zone — the northwest of the state, down to Empalme: Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Golfo de Santa Clara, Hermosillo, Kino Bay, Guaymas and San Carlos — a US or Canadian vehicle needs no permit at all. South of Empalme (Ciudad Obregón, Navojoa, Álamos) it needs the "Sólo Sonora" permit, with no deposit, and beyond Sonora the regular TIP; both are handled separately from your insurance (source: SHCP–Sonora agreement, DOF 25 Nov 2005, extended to 31 Dec 2026, and Mexican Customs, ANAM). One exception: a car towing motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis or a boat can't use the free zone and needs a TIP.

Nogales has two crossings: DeConcini, downtown, is fine for a car but narrow and busy with pedestrians; Mariposa, on the west-side truck route, is easier with an RV, a truck camper or a trailer. Weekday mornings and evenings usually move faster, while Sundays and Mexican holidays can back up for an hour or more. From Tucson, Nogales and Highway 15 lead to Hermosillo and San Carlos; Kino Bay is west of Hermosillo.
Rocky Point traffic uses Lukeville–Sonoyta (see Rocky Point), and from Yuma the San Luis Río Colorado crossing is the way to El Golfo de Santa Clara. If you continue into mainland Mexico, the Banjercito office for the vehicle permit on the Nogales route is at the Km 21 checkpoint, south of the city.
