Mexican Auto Insurance for Sonora: Rocky Point, San Carlos, Guaymas, Hermosillo

If you are driving your own car from Arizona into Sonora, you need a Mexican liability policy before you reach the border — your US or Canadian insurance does not satisfy Mexican law. Coverage takes minutes to set up by chat and can run for a single day or the whole trip.

Lukeville-Sonoyta: the direct gate to Rocky Point

Most Arizona traffic headed to Puerto Peñasco and Rocky Point crosses at Lukeville, AZ / Sonoyta, Sonora, reached via AZ-85 south through Ajo — roughly two hours from Phoenix or Tucson. This port is smaller than Nogales and has not always run 24 hours, so check current hours and CBP's live crossing feed before you leave, especially on a Friday afternoon or holiday weekend when Rocky Point traffic backs up in both directions.

Nogales: the route for Hermosillo, San Carlos and Guaymas

If you are continuing further south to Hermosillo, San Carlos or Guaymas, most drivers use the Nogales-Nogales port instead — larger, open 24 hours, feeding directly onto Mexico 15. Expect the heaviest lines during Semana Santa, Thanksgiving weekend and Mexican holidays.

What gets checked at the crossing

Mexican customs may do a quick declaration check southbound; on the way back, CBP asks for passport or passport card, and may inspect the vehicle. Keep your passport, vehicle registration or title (or a notarized letter if the car is financed and not in your name), driver's license, and proof of Mexican auto insurance within reach — not buried in the trunk.

Sonora free zone: when you do not need a TIP

Sonora has its own free zone that covers the state up through the authorized corridor to around Empalme, just past Guaymas — Hermosillo, San Carlos and Guaymas fall inside it, so no Temporary Import Permit (TIP/Banjercito) is required if that is as far as you are going. Push south of Empalme toward mainland Mexico and you will need to stop at a Banjercito module for a TIP; the liability insurance requirement, though, applies everywhere in Mexico regardless of the free zone.

Mistakes first-timers make here

The two most common: assuming the Mexico rider on a US policy covers liability (it usually only covers damage to your own vehicle, not the other driver), and assuming Lukeville runs on Nogales-style 24-hour schedules. Without a valid Mexican policy, an accident can mean the vehicle gets held and the driver detained while fault is sorted out.

Day-trip vs longer stay

A single day or weekend in Rocky Point is common enough that daily coverage makes sense and avoids paying for time you will not use. If you are combining Rocky Point with San Carlos or a longer Sonora loop, a weekly or multi-week term is usually cleaner than stacking day policies. Timi issues the policy over chat with Chubb backing it, so you can adjust the term right up to when you leave — see more route notes in the Timi guides.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Temporary Import Permit if I am only driving to San Carlos or Guaymas?
No. Sonora's free zone extends along the authorized route up to around Empalme, just past Guaymas, so a TIP is not required if that is your furthest point. You still need Mexican liability insurance regardless, since that requirement applies everywhere in Mexico.
Is the Lukeville-Sonoyta crossing open all night?
It is smaller than Nogales and hasn't historically run on a full 24-hour schedule the way the bigger ports do, so hours can vary. Check CBP's current crossing information before a late-night return, particularly if you are timing it around a Rocky Point weekend.
Should I cross at Nogales instead of Lukeville if I'm headed to Rocky Point?
Lukeville is the direct route and shorter drive for Puerto Peñasco. Nogales makes more sense if you're continuing on to Hermosillo, San Carlos or Guaymas, since it feeds straight onto Mexico 15 south.
