Full coverage for a Canadian-plated car from BC starts at about $31.62 USD per day or $438.38 USD per year, and liability-only runs from $23.25 USD per day or $197.00 USD per year (Chubb). BC snowbirds crossing into Baja, Sonora or further south need a Mexican-issued policy, because a Canadian auto policy is not valid liability coverage once you cross the border.
Your ICBC or private BC auto policy stops being valid liability coverage the moment you enter Mexico. Mexican law only recognizes liability written by a Mexican insurer, so a US/Canadian-plated car needs a separate Mexican policy before it crosses, no matter how far south the trip goes. Timi issues that policy through Chubb, and you can quote and buy it from your phone in about 2 minutes, with the policy PDF landing in your email before you reach the line.
If your whole route stays within Baja California, Baja California Sur, or the Sonora free zone, the temporary import permit is not required. If you plan to continue onto mainland Mexico beyond the border zone, the permit is required for that leg. Either way, insurance and the import permit are two separate things: the policy from Timi covers the vehicle for liability and, if you choose it, damage and theft, but the permit is handled separately at the crossing or online.
Plenty of BC snowbirds treat Baja as the first stop and keep going. If mainland Mexico is part of the plan, budget time for the import permit process and make sure your policy dates cover the whole stay, not just the drive down. A 6-month plan suits a typical snowbird season, while a full annual policy makes sense if you cross more than once a year or aren't sure of your exact return date.

Have your vehicle's plate number, VIN, and travel dates on hand, plus the driver's name as it appears on the license. That's enough for Timi to quote in chat. If you're comparing this to what other Canadian or snowbird drivers from other provinces use, the underwriting facts are the same — the policy is issued by Chubb either way.
